Apple’s foldable iPhone Duo is moving from concept to developer reality with a dedicated hackathon event in San Francisco. This gathering highlights the practical potential of dual-display and hinge mechanics for mobile applications. Developers are now testing tools that leverage the device’s unique form factor before its anticipated October release.
Developers showcase dual-display and hinge mechanics at Y Combinator event
The event, titled 'Bitrig Hacks: iPhone Duo Edition,' took place on September 26 at Y Combinator. Apple provided the technical foundation for the competition, supplying Xcode 27.1 Beta and the iOS 27.1 simulator. The company also released new Duo APIs specifically designed for this hardware configuration.
The competition drew 161 participants who submitted 73 distinct projects. The winning entry, 'Crate,' is an MPC application that uses the phone’s hinge to control audio effects. The second-place winner, 'Duo-Man,' functions as a digital Walkman simulator. Third place went to 'Saura,' a beauty assistant that uses the half-open fold as a physical stand.
A special award recognized 'TranslateCat,' a translation tool built for the dual-display interface. These prototypes demonstrate how software can adapt to the iPhone Duo’s mechanical constraints. The event confirms that the device will ship in October 2024 with iOS 27.1. We have previously covered the $19 cover layer replacement option for fixing foldable creases on this device.
