Koei Tecmo released a remastered version of Dynasty Warriors 3 this week, but the launch has triggered a candid conversation about the future of the series. Producer Tomohiko Sho made it clear that he does not want to spend his remaining career years polishing old titles. He plans to hand off future remaster duties to other staff members so he can focus on new games or sequels instead.
Producer Tomohiko Sho plans to hand off remaster duties to focus on new sequels
The current release is Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered, which rebuilds the original PlayStation 2 game using Unreal Engine 5. Sho views this project as a final chapter for his direct involvement in the franchise's legacy titles. He explicitly stated that he would rather create new experiences than continue updating existing ones.
"I’m in my 50s now, and I sometimes wonder ‘how many more games can I make before I retire’, so I’d rather make new games or sequels… So I’m thinking of letting someone else take on the next project," Sho said in a recent interview. This statement confirms his intention to step back from remastering work. The producer cited his age and limited remaining career time as the primary reasons for this decision.
Sho acknowledged that the success of this remaster will likely lead to more remasters of Dynasty Warriors 4 and later entries in the series. These future projects will presumably be handled by other staff members under his guidance. The studio is prioritizing new development over further remastering efforts led by Sho himself.
The game is now available for players who want to experience the classic title with modern graphics. Sho’s comments provide a clear direction for the franchise's future development strategy. Koei Tecmo will continue to expand the series through new games and sequels rather than relying on Sho to remaster older content.
