Sony raised the price of every current PlayStation 5 model in the United States, a move that increases the cost of entry for gamers and signals a strategic pivot away from hardware sales. The company is now prioritizing recurring revenue from its 125 million monthly active users over aggressive console distribution. This shift reflects a broader industry trend where manufacturers leverage established user bases to sustain profitability during the later stages of a product lifecycle.
Sony shifts focus to recurring revenue from 125 million users
The price adjustments affect the standard disc edition, the digital-only variant, and the high-end PS5 Pro. Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki described the timing of these increases as fortunate because it coincides with the latter half of the PS5 console's life. The executive emphasized that the company no longer needs to push hardware volume aggressively to maintain market presence.
The disc version of the PlayStation 5 now carries a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $650, up from $600. Sony increased the price of the digital alternative to $600, which represents a $100 jump from its previous $500 price point. The premium PS5 Pro model saw the largest absolute increase, rising to $900 from an original price of $750.
Totoki attributed the rising component costs to expanding artificial intelligence data centers that are consuming global memory supplies. He stated that the company is focusing on recurring revenue from the current user base rather than new hardware sales. Sony has not yet decided on the launch timing or price for the next generation console, the PS6.
The memory shortage threatens to delay the release of the PS6, according to reports citing Totoki's comments to the Wall Street Journal. The executive noted that Sony is not currently committing to a specific launch date or pricing structure for the successor console. This uncertainty leaves the current PS5 lineup as the primary hardware focus for the company for the foreseeable future.
