Blizzard cracks down on gold buyers in World of Warcraft: Forever, prompting players to build an IRS add- on to audit their own gold income.

Blizzard is cracking down on real-money gold trading in World of Warcraft: Forever, and the enforcement has sparked a unique community response. Players are no longer just reporting offenders; they are building tools to audit their own accounts. This shift highlights how the studio's strict policies are driving technical innovation within the player base.

Community creates self-audit tool to detect illicit gold before Blizzard acts

Senior game designer Josh Greenfield stated that the company will very aggressively punish gold buyers. The goal is to deter the black market by making the risk of account loss clear. Blizzard expects players to avoid transactions they know or should know are illegitimate.

A player named Ziqo created an add-on called IRS, short for Illicit Riches Scanner. The tool compares a character's peak gold holdings against recorded income from quests, loot, and sales. Any unexplained surplus triggers a flag, allowing players to self-audit before Blizzard does.

The system worked as intended when Ziqo ran it on his own mage account. The add-on flagged 529 of 538 peak gold as unexplained income. Ziqo admitted the character was failing the audit, demonstrating the tool's ability to catch discrepancies even in legitimate play.

Ziqo described the IRS add-on as hella bugged in its current state. A Reddit player noted the scanner pulls from the achievements tab, which misses quest gold and auction house sales. These gaps mean the tool is not yet a complete audit solution.

Blizzard previously banned gold buyers in World of Warcraft Classic starting November 4. That earlier enforcement set the stage for the current crackdown in Forever. We touched on Blizzard Bans WoW Classic Gold Buyers in our earlier Blizzard coverage.
