The root cause lies in how Windows handles disconnected hardware. Eco Mode power-gates the Nvidia GPU to save energy, which makes the operating system view the graphics card as absent. The Windows driver cleanup utility, pnpclean.dll, interprets this absence as a permanent removal. It then proceeds to delete the associated driver packages from the system.
Affected systems show the GPU as a Microsoft Basic Display Adapter in Device Manager. The default timeout for this cleanup is 30 days, but reports indicate drivers can vanish in as little as 15 days. This rapid deletion leaves the laptop unable to run demanding applications that require discrete graphics acceleration. The problem appears isolated to ASUS ROG devices running Windows 11.
