War Thunder is breaking a 14-year streak of vehicle-only combat by introducing a dedicated frontline infantry mode. This shift matters because it expands the game's scope beyond tanks and aircraft, offering players a new way to engage in military simulations. The update, titled 'The Line of Contact', represents a significant structural change to the core gameplay loop that has defined the title since its launch.

Gaijin Entertainment introduces frontline infantry gameplay after 14 years of vehicle-only combat

Gaijin Entertainment developed this new infantry mode using a separate in-house team composed of industry veterans with shooter game experience. The studio confirmed that this specialized group operates independently from the developers responsible for existing vehicle modes. This separation ensures that the introduction of infantry does not divert resources or attention away from updating and upgrading the current air, land, and sea assets.

The development team views the addition of infantry as a logical extension of the game's comprehensive military simulation. Gaijin stated that it always seemed logical to add infantry to the game, similar to other military assets that exist in the real world but were previously absent. The mode is currently in early testing stages, allowing the studio to refine mechanics before a wider release.

Beyond the infantry update, Gaijin is exploring new content avenues to enrich the War Thunder ecosystem. The studio is creating its own anime franchise, 'Senrai Maidens', to facilitate in-game collaborations since licensed anime properties featuring military vehicles are limited. Additionally, the game remains free-to-play across PC, consoles, mobile, and VR platforms, with a standalone VR spin-off titled 'Aces of Thunder' already released for PSVR.
