Indie developer Kweepa has released Unity Underground, a complete fan-made remake of the classic 1992 PC title Ultima Underworld. The project appeals to retro gaming enthusiasts by modernizing a foundational first-person RPG while preserving its core design philosophy. Players who missed the original release or want to experience it on modern systems can now download the project globally.
Kweepa's fan project modernizes the 1992 classic with full engine rebuild
The remake is built entirely within the Unity Engine, replacing the original engine while preserving the game's isometric dungeon-crawling structure. Kweepa has remade and animated all enemies from the original title. Inventory and environment objects have been fully re-modeled to fit the new engine's capabilities. The project also introduces unique audio and particle effects to enhance the atmospheric tension.
Unity Underground requires the full version of Ultima Underworld to function, meaning it is not a standalone purchase. The developer officially supports only the GOG version of the original game for data compatibility. Users must own a legitimate copy of the classic title to run the remake. This approach honors the original intellectual property while enabling compatibility with modern hardware.
The game supports both mouse and keyboard controls as well as Xbox controller input for players who prefer console-style navigation. Kweepa has been working on the project since 2015, though the timeline extends over a decade in the source material. The remake is available for immediate download from Kweepa's itch.io page.
