A Reddit user has modified a Steam Deck LCD into a Game Boy form factor. The project works as a proof of concept, though the screen currently fails to function.

's has inspired a community of hardware tinkerers to reimagine its form factor, and a new project is attempting to shrink the handheld PC into a retro Game Boy shell. This modding effort matters to enthusiasts who want portable gaming devices with a nostalgic aesthetic, even if the current iteration remains a work in progress. The project demonstrates how flexible the Deck's internal architecture is for third-party customization.

Reddit user PhyFawkes shrinks handheld PC into retro shell

The "SteamBoy" mod was created by Reddit user PhyFawkes, who is repurposing components from the original LCD version of the Steam Deck. The build retains the core functionality of the PC by using the original motherboard, battery, speakers, and control buttons. PhyFawkes integrated a smaller cooling fan and a new display screen to accommodate the significantly reduced size of the Game Boy-style enclosure.

The device currently functions as a proof of concept, meaning the internal hardware can operate within the new chassis. However, the new screen is not yet functional, which prevents full usability of the retro-formatted device. The creator has identified that enabling the display will likely require a custom adapter and modifications to the system BIOS to ensure the motherboard recognizes the new panel.

We have been tracking Steam Deck closely and noted earlier coverage on the Banjo-Kazooie Native PC Port Released for Steam Deck. Cooling efficiency remains a potential concern with this smaller fan, as it may struggle to dissipate heat during demanding games. The project stands as an early-stage demonstration of what is possible when combining modern PC hardware with classic handheld designs.
