Adobe users looking for alternatives to subscription-heavy creative tools now have a new open-source option. Brandon Thomas has released ArtCraft, a suite of seven applications designed to replace popular Adobe products. This project matters because it challenges the proprietary model of industry-standard software using modern development practices.
Brandon Thomas releases seven-app suite built in Rust with AI assistance
The ArtCraft suite includes PhotoCraft for image editing, VectorCraft for vector graphics, and FilmCraft for video editing. It also provides LightCraft for photo management, PrintCraft for PDF handling, EffectCraft for motion graphics, and DesignCraft for layout design. Each application targets a specific function within the Adobe Creative Cloud ecosystem.
Thomas built the entire suite from scratch using the Rust programming language. He utilized Claude Opus 5.5 as an AI coding assistant during the development process. Developing the suite in Rust aims to ensure high performance and memory safety while maintaining an open-source license.
The project is positioned as a clean-room reimplementation to avoid copyright infringement. Thomas states that no Adobe code was used in the creation of these applications. Whether Adobe agrees with this legal stance remains uncertain, as the company has not yet issued a public response to the release.
