Rocknix released a new nightly build on September 1, 2026, that updates core system components for handheld gaming devices. This release matters to owners of -based handhelds and other -powered consoles because it improves display orientation support and updates the underlying media framework. Users who rely on vertical screen modes or specific video playback features will see immediate changes in their daily experience. The update targets a wide range of hardware, from Qualcomm Snapdragon platforms to older Rockchip and Amlogic chips.

New firmware improves vertical screen modes and updates core media frameworks

The firmware update touches the Linux kernel, EmulationStation, and the client across multiple device families. Devices using SM8250, SM8550, SM8650, SM6115, and H700 processors now run Linux kernel version 7.2. This kernel bump replaces previous versions to align with newer driver requirements for these specific System-on-Chip models. Meanwhile, RK3399 devices rolled back to kernel 6.18.x for stability, and S922X units updated to version 7.1.9.

Under the hood, the update enables GLES3 support in EmulationStation and bumps the MPV media player to version 0.41.0. These changes improve graphical rendering for retro gaming interfaces and expand video codec compatibility for media playback. The Steam client received specific updates to handle 180-degree handheld displays and now utilizes Valve's fex-emu container for compatibility. Rocknix also updated its ABL bootloader to version 1.1.8 to ensure proper device initialization.

Audio subsystems for S922X and Pocket S Mini devices received fixes through updates to WirePlumber and PulseAudio. The GRUB bootloader also gained fixes for device selection and DTB handling to prevent boot failures on certain configurations. We looked at the last Rocknix update earlier while tracking launches, and several of the same balance and stability themes came up in this release. The nightly build tag 20260901 is now available for users to install on their supported handheld hardware.
