The v1.0 release of Pokémon Crystal Inheritance, a fan-made ROM hack for the Game Boy Color classic Pokémon Crystal, marks the conclusion of over six years in development by creator dwg. The project introduces a new narrative where Celebi transports the player to an alternate timeline of Johto threatened by Emperor Mejimi and his generals.
Fan-made ROM hack modernizes Game Boy Color classic with new story and mechanics
Built on top of Polished Crystal 3.0.0, the hack modernizes the original experience with contemporary mechanics. It includes the Fairy type, the Physical/Special split introduced in later generations, natures, unlimited TMs, and running shoes to streamline gameplay.
The game features a custom Pokédex containing 254 entries that expand beyond the original roster. This list incorporates Pokémon from Sinnoh, Hisuian forms, and two original fan-created monsters known as fakemon: Keeper Noctowl and Minsir.
Several new systems enhance exploration and customization within the game world. A reworked Apricorn system allows players to craft five distinct types of Pokéballs, while a Hidden Palette feature enables adjustments to NPC individual values (IVs). Overworld puzzles are also designed around time-travel mechanics.
Difficulty settings range from Easy to Expert, with Nuzlocke mode integrated directly into the options menu. The entire Pokédex is catchable in a single playthrough, encouraging comprehensive collection without multiple save files.
