The OrangePi O1 is a new single-board computer that prioritizes edge AI capabilities and adaptable storage options. The SBC appeals to developers needing on-device neural network processing without cloud dependency. The board comes with a specialized Tensor Processing Unit in addition to general computing cores.

New single-board computer targets edge AI developers with specialized hardware

The OrangePi O1 is based on the Sophgo BM1688 system-on-chip. The SoC has an ARM Cortex-A53 octa-core CPU paired with a RISC-V C906 co-processor. The heterogeneous design enables general computing while accelerating AI inference tasks on specialized hardware.

Specifications

  • SoC: Sophgo BM1688
  • CPU: 8x ARM Cortex-A53 + RISC-V C906
  • AI Performance: 16 TOPS (INT8)
  • RAM: 8 GB or 16 GB LPDDR4/LPDDR4X
  • Storage: eMMC, M.2 NVMe, SATA

The onboard TPU supports up to 16 TOPS for INT8 operations. Storage options include an optional eMMC module, an M.2 PCIe 3.0 NVMe slot, and a dedicated SATA port. RAM options include 8 GB or 16 GB LPDDR4/LPDDR4X.

There are two Gigabit Ethernet ports for extensive network connectivity. Other ports include 2 USB 2.0, 2 USB 3.0, and an HDMI 2.0 port for 4K video output. The SBC has dimensions of 90mm x 70mm. It can be powered through a 20V USB Type-C port.

The OrangePi O1 is still not very widely available. At this time, there is no official word on the pricing or international availability schedule. Developers curious about the BM1688 hardware should keep track of the availability.
