Netflix Games has lost the studio behind its official FIFA World Cup title, and the timing raises immediate questions about the future of the software. Refactor Games, the developer responsible for FIFA World Cup: Launch Edition, has reportedly shut down operations entirely. This closure impacts the game's long-term viability, as Netflix previously promised the title would evolve over time. Purchasers of the title may find their investment stranded without ongoing support or updates.

Studio closure leaves FIFA World Cup Launch Edition without planned updates

Refactor Games was a Los Angeles-based studio partially owned by Delphi Interactive. The team shipped FIFA World Cup: Launch Edition to Netflix Games on June 11. The release arrived just before the tournament began, but the rushed development cycle drew sharp criticism from critics and players alike. The studio's sudden dissolution marks the end of its involvement with the franchise.

Key figures from the studio have publicly confirmed the severity of the situation. Art Director Barclay Chantel stated that Delphi pulled the plug on Refactor Studios immediately after the game shipped. He noted that the entire studio was let go and offered to connect interested parties with the displaced talent. Product Designer Victor Del Castillo added that the studio's parent company cancelled funding for the next project, forcing the entire team, including himself, into layoffs.

These reports contradict earlier statements from Netflix regarding the game's roadmap. Netflix had previously indicated that FIFA World Cup: Launch Edition would evolve over time to remain relevant. Current accounts from developers suggest that the planned evolution and any subsequent funding have been scrapped. The studio's closure means there is no internal team left to execute those promised changes or maintain the live service.

This situation highlights the risks associated with short-term game development for major events. Refactor Games delivered a product that met the initial launch window but failed to secure the resources for long-term sustainability. The layoff of the entire staff effectively ends any possibility of official post-launch content for the title. The game remains available, but its future as a living service appears to have ended with the studio's closure.
