A community modder has transformed the classic Metal Gear Solid into a third-person experience, offering players a fresh perspective on a game originally designed for a fixed camera angle. This change matters because it unlocks a new way to navigate the original stealth mechanics, appealing to fans who want to revisit the PS1 era with modern control schemes. The mod allows you to play as Grey Fox, a character known for speed and agility, which fits the experimental nature of the new viewpoint. You can download the first experimental version of this mod from Perfect Pizza’s Discord server today.

Beta update brings experimental viewpoint to GOG version

The project is led by modder Perfect Pizza, who released a beta update for the first Metal Gear Solid game. This mod is specifically compatible only with the GOG version of the title, meaning or other platform users cannot run it yet. The update introduces an experimental third-person camera mode that shifts the entire visual layout of the game. Players can now experience the classic stealth gameplay from a completely different angle, which changes how they track enemies and plan routes.

The current beta version includes support for playing as Grey Fox, complete with his signature plasma arm and sword trail abilities. Stealth mechanics remain intact, allowing players to utilize the new camera to their advantage in these specific missions. However, the mod is limited to VR missions only, so you cannot play the main campaign mode with this character or camera setup. The modder has not yet confirmed if full campaign support will ever be added to this beta release.

We looked at Metal Gear Solid 2 Gets Modern earlier while tracking launches, but this current project focuses on the original title's camera and character mechanics. The modder acknowledges that the game was not created with this viewpoint in mind, which may affect movement smoothness. I am not sure whether the modder will be able to smooth out movement so that the camera movement can feel better. The full version is under active development, so players should expect further updates as the project progresses.

This beta mod provides a functional third-person camera and Grey Fox gameplay for GOG users interested in experimental changes. The release is available now via the creator's Discord server, though it remains limited to VR missions. Players seeking a complete campaign overhaul will need to wait for future development updates. The mod stands as a significant community effort to reimagine a classic stealth title.
