John Romero revealed that the new publisher has been found for his unnamed shooter game that Microsoft had previously cancelled. This is important because it is another opportunity for a high profile game that was previously cancelled. So for those that were watching the original path this game took will now get to see the studio move forward under new terms.

Romero Games rehires key staff and redesigns game for lean team

This unnamed shooter is being developed by the studio Romero Games. Romero’s studio has been through a major restructuring process to adjust to the new publisher. According to Romero, this is a perfect deal because the publisher has no creative objectives at all.

Romero’s studio originally had 110 people working there. They trimmed that down to just 5 people before bringing on 10 leads back in. So the total number of people currently is about 15-16 people.

Romero revealed that the game itself has been completely re-designed and re-sized to match their new team size. But they were able to keep the existing intellectual property, art, code, etc.

John Romero is big on the smaller team size. He doesn’t want to deal with the management overhead and he wants to be a part of the game design. He said with the new publisher they can do whatever they want to do, with no interference. This is a big part of their current strategy to get the game out there, with this creative freedom.

We don’t know who the new publisher is, but Romero specifically said he can’t say. He also didn’t provide any details or an announcement date or anything. They’re focused on development, not PR-ing milestones right now.
