Huawei filed a patent for a vertical tri- fold smartphone featuring two hinges, an external screen portion, and a three- segment design for compact folding.

Huawei filed a new patent for a vertical tri-fold smartphone design that uses two hinges to fold twice. The device creates a Z-shaped configuration when fully closed, leaving a portion of the flexible screen visible on the exterior. The design enables the device to remain compact in its folded state while providing a larger screen when opened.

The patent describes a three-segment architecture for the vertical tri-fold smartphone. The upper segment houses the primary rear camera system and connects via the first hinge. The middle segment contains key electronic components and connecting elements between the two folding sections. The lower segment serves as a weight distribution base and extends the monitor display when unfolded.

Huawei's design relies on two hinges to achieve the double-fold motion. The flexible screen wraps around all three segments while maintaining visibility on the outside of the folded device. Electronic components cluster in the middle section to support connectivity between the upper and lower halves. The configuration allows the phone to fold into a Z-shape rather than a flat rectangle.

The patent suggests the company is still investigating devices with multiple hinges. Unlike standard foldable phones, this model incorporates an additional hinge to create three distinct sections. Huawei has not announced when or if this design will be released to consumers.
