With the Hellraiser Revival's launch in Russia and Australia, developers have unleashed their title into the wild after intentionally going for a regulatory backlash. The Russian and Australian release marks the departure from original developers' goals of getting a ban or refusal for a title at least in one of the territories. This means that if you like your horror content uncensored you'll be able to enjoy it here. But if you are one of the soft-hearted people out there, beware – it's pretty explicit.
Hellraiser: Revival launches in Russia and Australia after developers aimed for a ban
HellraiserRevival, created by Saber Interactive is a first-ever Hellraiser title as a standalone experience. The story promotes an interactive approach towards the taboo subjects. The developers wanted to make the players engage with the dark stuff and confront it head-on. The way they achieved it – through the gameplay.
Nudity, gore, self-harm references, sexual episodes – all are in the Hellraiser: Revival. In order to bypass more age restrictions in certain areas, developers made camera adjustments during the explicit content scenes. So, thanks to concessions, the title received the ratings which allowed to sell it in Russia and Australia.
Indonesian authorities didn't want to rate the project – so Hellraiser: Revival got an RC status, which means effective ban on legal sale in the country. As Anthony De Fault (narrative director) shared, the ultimate goal was to get a ban/refusal as an unofficial target for the team. This way they would understand that they hit the nail with content.
