Hasbro has invested nearly $1 billion USD in its video game division since 2018. The company built six internal studios and a publishing organization to develop first-party titles. Chris Cocks, the CEO of Hasbro, outlined this strategy during an interview with The Game Business. He emphasized that the company focuses on traditional single-player games rather than live-service models.
Hasbro outlines its strategic shift to traditional single-player PC and console titles while building internal studios.
Hasbro plans to release two major titles in 2027. The first project is Exodus, a new intellectual property developed by Archetype Entertainment. This studio was founded by James Ohlen and includes several former BioWare developers. The second title is Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons, which Invoke will develop.
Cocks explained that Hasbro chose to focus on PC and console action-adventure and role-playing games. He described this approach as a safer financial bet compared to other gaming sectors. The company relies on its position as the world's leading digital games licensor to fund these internal development efforts. Licensing revenue from franchises like Magic: The Gathering, Transformers, and Dungeons & Dragons supports this strategy.
Hasbro intends to partner with external developers for casual games, mobile titles, and emerging platforms such as virtual reality. Cocks noted that traditional single-player games offer a higher probability of recovering initial investments. He stated that even unsuccessful projects in this category typically return fifty to seventy cents on the dollar.
