Epic Games released Fortnite update 5.23 on October 6 to address balance issues from the recent Fortnitemares event. Players who struggled with the new horror-themed items can now expect smoother movement and more reliable combat performance. This patch directly impacts daily gameplay by tweaking the stats of three key items introduced in the seasonal event.

Epic Games adjusts Fortnitemares item stats in October 6 patch
The update targets specific weapons and abilities that defined the Fortnitemares experience. Freddy's Nightmare, a tactical item, now allows players to move faster and spend less stamina while sprinting. This change makes the item more viable for aggressive playstyles that rely on quick repositioning.
Weapon balance received significant attention in this release. Dual Fiend Hunters gained improved accuracy when players aim down sights, reducing the spread that previously made them difficult to control. Conversely, Rebecca's Guns faced a nerf to their destructive power. Epic Games greatly reduced the damage these weapons deal to structures and slightly slowed their reload speed to prevent them from dominating building mechanics.
Beyond the Fortnitemares items, the patch lays groundwork for future stability improvements. Several known issues across Battle Royale, Zero Build, Mobile, Save the World, Fortnite Festival, and LEGO Fortnite are scheduled for fixes in the upcoming patch 42.40. Mobile users can already access the intermediate update v42.30 on Google Play, which includes earlier stability adjustments.
When we covered the last Fortnite update, several of the same balance and stability themes came up. This release continues that trend by refining the tools players use in competitive modes. The changes aim to create a more consistent environment for those engaging with the current seasonal content.
