EA closes BioWare meaning that the next Mass Effect game will no longer be made. This cancellation is a huge loss for the near-future game line-up. It means that we will never see the sequel come to fruition for fans that are waiting to play the next entry in the franchise. This is a huge event for the franchise.
BioWare Edmonton closes immediately after Dragon Age sales miss
The shutdown is coming for BioWare Edmonton specifically. The Mass Effect team is only about 50 people. This was a decrease from the previous headcount of around 100 people. The team was working on the title after Dragon Age: The Veilguard failed to meet sales expectations.
The news was shared with the team by EA leadership. They made it clear to the team that they are no longer going to be doing development for Mass Effect. The studio shutdown was shared in detail by Jason Schreier. We don't know whether or not they attempted to sell BioWare to another publisher.
We've been covering the Mass Effect series pretty well previously. We discussed previously the need for original creators to return for the next Mass Effect game. Now, we won't get that opportunity due to the cancellation. It's shelved forever.
BioWare Edmonton is shutting down effective immediately. The sequel for Mass Effect has been cancelled. Electronic Arts is in the process of restructuring their dev teams right now. What will happen with the franchise is unclear.
