E Ink launches Kaleido 4, doubling color gamut to 40K and enabling 18fps video. The Hanvon M10C II is the first device to use the new display technology.

E-ink has announced Kaleido 4, their latest, fourth generation, color e-paper platform to power the next generation of more compelling color tablets, e-readers, and monitors. For customers who care about image and text fidelity, there's a noticeable difference in how text and images will look in the next generation of color e-ink. The company claims that Kaleido 4 has a color gamut volume that exceeds 40K.

Hanvon M10C II debuts as the first device featuring the new oxide TFT backplane

This is 2x the color gamut volume of the previous generation. The additional color depth in Kaleido 4 translates into more accurate and vibrant color in e-ink displays.

Specifications

  • Color Gamut Volume: Above 40K (twice the previous generation)
  • White Reflectance: Up by 15%
  • Contrast: Improves by 50%
  • Video Refresh Rate: Up to 18fps
  • Backplane Technology: Oxide TFT

The first consumer device to use the Kaleido 4 e-ink display is the Hanvon M10C II tablet. It's powered by a qualcomm octa-core CPU and has 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. To power all this, E-ink built the Kaleido 4 display with an oxide TFT backplane. This technical foundation underpins the ability of the Kaleido 4 display to support more complex visual applications than previously available on any e-ink display.

Kaleido 4 isn't just a collection of technical upgrades. White reflectance improves by 15%. Contrast improves by 50%.

New algorithms enable video playback at up to 18 frames per second on the display. E-ink says page turning and scrolling operations are 27% faster than the previous generation. These improvements should address many common concerns about the performance of color e-paper devices.

The Hanvon M10C II will come with a wireless, battery-free pen that supports 8192 pressure levels. The stylus support makes the device ideal for detailed drawing or precise note-taking. The improved contrast and refresh rates contribute to a more responsive writing experience. E-ink says these updates are a major step forward in the color e-paper world.

The Kaleido 4 launch is a big development in the color e-paper world, beyond just text to more media experiences. The Hanvon M10C II is the first device to showcase these advanced specs. Other future devices using the display are sure to provide better reading and more responsive experiences. It's a new standard for color e-ink devices.
