SOFTWARE AND UPDATES

Discord is testing a new interface option that changes how users see each other during voice calls. The update provides a more relaxed visual style for group conversations, making casual chats feel less like a grid and more like a gathering. The change gives users control over how their voice channels appear, allowing them to choose a layout that fits their social context.

New interface option replaces participant grid with seated avatars

The feature is called the Living Room layout and it applies specifically to voice channels within the Discord application. It replaces the default vertical list of participants with a horizontal arrangement of seated avatars. This shift in perspective aims to mimic a physical living space where friends sit together.

Users can switch their default view to Living Room mode directly from the voice channel settings. The system displays every participant in a different seat, creating a row of avatars across the screen. This visual change is purely cosmetic and does not alter the audio quality or the functional ability to speak or mute.

Discord describes this update as an experiment, indicating that the feature is still in a testing phase. The company is exploring whether this seated arrangement improves the social experience for voice chat users. The Living Room layout is currently available for those who wish to try the new visual style during their calls.
