Firaxis Games is releasing the Test of Time update for Civilization 7 on May 19, 2025. The update introduces Time-Tested civs, which allow players to carry a single civilization through all ages instead of switching at key junctures.

Time-Tested civs offer scaling abilities across all ages.

Time-Tested civs have an Apex Age and can be used in other ages with scaling abilities. Unique units become obsolete over time, but Traditions compensate for the loss. The new Syncretism Civic lets players borrow abilities from associated civs. Over 100 new unique Civic trees have been added to the game.

Matt Owens, a representative from Firaxis, explained that the team wanted to give Time-Tested civs unique gameplay outside their Apex Age so they could feel powerful in a different way. He also emphasized that the power of choice remains as important as ever. Some details about the update's impact on balance remain unclear.
