Gearbox is releasing version 1.8 of Borderlands 4 on June 25, 2024. This update introduces a new playable character and significant changes to the game's monetization structure. Players can now access cross-platform save functionality through the Shift profile system. This feature allows gamers to continue their progress seamlessly across different hardware platforms.

New hacker character Loveless joins the roster alongside a difficult new endgame zone

The new character is a hacker named Loveless who joins the existing robotic bounty hunter C4SH. Gearbox describes Loveless as sharing her mind with a digital virus that can materialize into a physical form. This virus acts as a deadly extension of her perfection-seeking will. The new character introduces a digital warfare theme to the game's roster.

The free update includes a new endgame zone called the Hadron Abyss. This area features a boss fight that Gearbox describes as an extremely difficult gauntlet. The update also includes a hardcore challenge mode where a single death results in immediate failure. The new content provides a challenging test for experienced players.

Gearbox is restructuring its paid content with two new purchases available immediately. Bounty Pack 3, titled 'A Zane to Kill For,' costs 5.99 USD (around $5.99). The Vault Card 3 pass is also available for 5.99 USD (around $5.99). These packs offer narrative content and core gear for those seeking additional progression.

Future content will arrive in September with separate pricing for story and character unlocks. Story Pack 2, which adds a new zone and story content, will cost 19.99 USD (around $19.99). The Loveless character and her associated cosmetics will be available for 9.99 USD (around $9.99). The separate pricing allows players to choose which parts of the expansion they want to purchase.
