Batocera 43, the latest version of the open-source retro gaming operating system, is now available globally. The update adds initial support for several new handheld devices, including the AYN Thor, Retroid Pocket 6, and multiple Anbernic models such as the RG28XX, RG34XX, RG35XX, RG40XX, and RG CubeXX. Other newly supported handhelds include the 2 Mini and PowKiddy X55.

Unified image for SM8250 and SM8550 devices

A key change in Batocera 43 is the unification of images for SM8250 and SM8550 devices. Users must upgrade the Android Bootloader (ABL) before migrating to the new version. The update also replaces Azahar Plus with the source project Azahar, and 3DS ROMs now require decryption. The closed-source DraStic emulator has been removed. On the addition side, the Cemu emulator is now available for SM8550 devices.

EmulationStation gains new features including LED color control and brightness control for the AYN Thor, as well as new keyboard options. A virtual keyboard for Wayland touchscreen devices has been added. Several fixes are included, such as resolving Odin 2 Wi-Fi issues in some regions, correcting MelonDS save and cheat paths, and fixing the PS4 and PSVita last played collection.

Batocera 43 is available now for download. The update brings a range of improvements and new hardware support, though some features like the exact performance impact of the unified image remain to be seen. Batocera has not commented on future plans beyond this release.
