Apple reportedly plans a MacBook Neo with a 13.8- inch OLED display and hidden camera for late 2028, filling the gap between Air and Pro models.

SOFTWARE AND UPDATES

Apple reportedly plans to introduce a new MacBook with an OLED display toward the end of 2028 or early 2029. This move addresses a long-standing gap in the lineup where the entry-level MacBook Air retained LCD screens while higher-end models adopted OLED panels. Buyers looking for a mid-tier device with modern display technology may finally have a dedicated option instead of choosing between the Air and Pro.

New mid-tier model targets notch-free OLED design

The new model, identified in reports as the MacBook Neo, will feature a 13.8-inch OLED touchscreen. Apple reportedly aims to hide the webcam behind the OLED panel itself, eliminating the need for a notch or punch hole. This design choice creates a fully uninterrupted screen surface, which appeals to users who prioritize visual immersion and clean aesthetics.

MacBook Neo Rumored Specifications

  • Display Technology: OLED
  • Screen Size: 13.8-inch
  • Camera Design: Hidden behind OLED panel, no notch or punch hole
  • Color Space Coverage: 95 percent of BT.2020
  • Processor (MacBook Ultra): Apple M5 Pro and M5 Max

Technical specifications include a display capable of covering 95 percent of the BT.2020 color space. This wide color gamut supports professional workflows requiring accurate color reproduction. The device sits between the LCD-equipped MacBook Air and the OLED-equipped MacBook Pro in terms of display technology.

Apple reportedly scrapped plans for a foldable MacBook, focusing instead on this flat OLED design. The MacBook Air will continue to use LCD displays at least until 2030. The higher-end MacBook Ultra is rumored to use M5 Pro and M5 Max chips rather than the newer M6 architecture. We touched on Apple M6 iMac Launching Before 2026 in our earlier Apple coverage.

Apple’s roadmap suggests a phased rollout of OLED technology across its laptop lineup. The MacBook Neo targets the mid-range segment with a 13.8-inch screen and notch-free design. Availability is projected for late 2028 or early 2029, with no pricing details confirmed yet.
