Apple iOS 27 EU Mandate Breaks iPhone AirPlay Monopoly

Lena Fischer 1 min read

Apple's upcoming iOS 27 update for the European Union will allow iPhone users to set default third-party streaming services, breaking Apple's proprietary AirPlay monopoly.

Apple will introduce a system-wide change in iOS 27 that allows iPhone users to set default streaming services across the device. This update addresses regulatory requirements in the European Union, which mandate competition for Apple's proprietary AirPlay technology.

iPhone users gain system-wide casting control in September update

The new feature enables users to select third-party casting options like Google Cast through the system settings menu. Previously, individual apps restricted users to AirPlay as the sole wireless display protocol. The change applies to all supported applications on the device rather than requiring per-app configuration.

Apple plans to release iOS 27 in September. The update targets iPhone devices sold within the European Union region due to local digital market regulations.

This modification shifts control of media casting from individual application developers to the operating system level. It reduces Apple's monopoly over wireless streaming protocols on its mobile platform.
