gamers using graphics cards can now access experimental AI upscaling in Vulkan games through the open-source NVK driver. This development targets users who previously faced significant performance gaps compared to the proprietary NVIDIA driver on Linux systems. The update aims to improve frame rates and visual quality in compatible titles running on Play.

Open-source Vulkan driver leverages CuBIN binaries to close performance gap

The changes arrive in Mesa 26.2-devel, which integrates experimental support directly into the NVK Vulkan driver. NVK implements the VK_NVX_binary_import extension to load NVIDIA's CuBIN binaries without requiring a full reimplementation of the upscaling technology. This approach allows the open-source driver to leverage existing NVIDIA hardware capabilities for AI-driven image enhancement.

  • Mesa Version: 26.2
  • Feature: Experimental DLSS support
  • Vulkan Extension: VK_NVX_binary_import
  • Enablement: NVK_EXPERIMENTAL=dlss environment variable

Users must manually enable this feature by setting the NVK_EXPERIMENTAL=dlss environment variable before launching games. The driver requires compatible CUDA bytecode for the specific GPU being used to function correctly. Developers have noted that the feature merged as experimental and currently contains known bugs that may affect stability.

Mesa 26.2 is expected to reach a stable release in August, which will make this functionality available to a wider audience. The update represents a significant step in closing the performance disparity between the open-source NVK driver and NVIDIA's proprietary Linux driver. Linux users can expect improved gaming performance on supported NVIDIA hardware once the stable version is released.
