Sony has filed a patent for a controller with buttons that can change their hardness using magnets. The buttons could trap a player's finger by hardening around it, simulating the sensation of being grabbed. This feature is similar to the DualSense adaptive triggers but applied to the buttons instead.
Magnets adjust button resistance dynamically
The patent describes a controller where magnets adjust the resistance of each button. Players would feel different levels of hardness depending on the game context. In some scenarios, the button could become so hard that it holds the player's finger, forcing them to physically pull away.
This design builds on Sony's existing haptic technology in the DualSense controller. The adaptive triggers already vary resistance, but the patent extends that concept to the face buttons. If implemented, it could add a new layer of immersion for PlayStation games.
As spotted by Cheat Happens, the proposed controller would feature buttons that use magnets to change how hard or easy they are to press. This would leave the player feeling 'grasped' by the controller and force them to physically force themselves free. However, a patent filing does not guarantee that the feature will appear in future PlayStation hardware.
