MediaTek Dimensity 8550 Adds Gemini Nano V3 Support With No Major Spec Changes

Lena Fischer 2 min read

MediaTek announces the Dimensity 8550, adding Gemini Nano V3 support and NPU 880 features. The chip retains Cortex-A725 cores and Mali-G720 GPU specs for upcoming smartphones.

MediaTek quietly introduced the Dimensity 8550, a mobile processor built on TSMC’s 4nm process that adds support for Google’s Gemini Nano V3 AI features. The chip retains identical CPU and GPU specifications to the previous Dimensity 8500 model while introducing an NPU 880 with LLM Booster for on-device artificial intelligence processing. First devices using this new chipset include the Honor 600 Pro and Oppo Reno 16, which launched in May 2026.

The new mobile processor introduces AI capabilities while keeping hardware specifications identical to its predecessor.

The Dimensity 8550 utilizes eight Cortex-A725 big cores to handle processing tasks. The lead core operates at a clock speed of 3.4GHz, three additional cores run at 3.2GHz, and four remaining cores function at 2.2GHz. The chip offers a balanced mix of speed and power management suitable for smartphones.

Graphics processing is handled by the Mali-G720 MC8 GPU within the Dimensity 8550 chipset. The processor supports display outputs up to 1440p resolution with refresh rates reaching 144Hz. Video recording capabilities allow for 4K capture at 60fps, while AV1 playback support ensures compatibility with modern streaming formats.

Camera support extends to sensors with resolutions up to 320MP on devices equipped with the Dimensity 8550. Connectivity options include 5G networks with dual SIM dual active functionality, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.4. The chipset accommodates LPDDR5X RAM operating at speeds of 9,600Mbps alongside UFS 4.0 storage for fast data access.

MediaTek has not released official pricing information or confirmed worldwide launch schedules for the Dimensity 8550. Initial device launches were limited to the Chinese market in May 2026 with models like the Honor 600 Pro and Oppo Reno 16. Global device launches are already underway with models such as the Oppo Reno 16 debuting in May 2026.

The inclusion of Gemini Nano V3 features on Dimensity 8550 devices is not guaranteed across all handsets. Implementation requires specific hardware configurations such as at least 12GB of RAM and corresponding operating system support beyond mere chip compatibility. Phones running the chipset with only 8GB of RAM will not qualify for these AI capabilities.
