Showrunner Bartosz Sztybor cuts family scenes to preserve character mystery
Showrunner of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Bartosz Sztybor has been clear in his creative vision, which is that they will never show the backstory of the character Roman Karax in any Cyberpunk ever. Making sure that the mystery of Roman Karax stays locked away for the enigma that's been created to be mysterious. He's the retro enthusiast and the character that makes connections with other characters, a nod to 80s and 90s pop culture. A character that doesn't need to have much backstory to have his role be effective.
When the first drafts of the show were written, there was supposed to be more family scenes for Roman Karax that got cut out to keep the mystery of the character to enhance the mystique. Sztybor elaborated that if they went into his backstory and his family then it would all fall apart, and it's important that his unknown backstory is a vital part of the character. Not having that character backstory in the series helps avoid traditional character development paths, it keeps the story interesting with mystery.
The series seems to be doing well already with being at the top of the latest anime poll (fall) with 16.42% of the votes. Indicating a strong engagement of viewers with the series. It goes to show how popular it is to enjoy the unique aesthetic and themes of the franchise. With praise and fans' support it seems that not showing it all, has been well received with the viewers.
Roman Karax is still a mystery and that mystery is intentional for the show. It's not a void in the story but a way that the show has been crafted. Viewers get to enjoy how the character influences the story without the backstory of where he comes from.
Instead letting the character's actions and presence do the talking. Which helps focus the story on the here and now and the world of Night City. It lets the story progress.
