The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening Remake is now playable on mobile without a Nintendo Switch thanks to an unofficial Android port. The effort proves it's possible to run complex game recompilations on mid-tier Android phones, creating a viable option for those without the original game console.
Unofficial Android port enables mobile play without a Switch console
The Android port for The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening Remake was developed by Nycolazs and uses the fan project engine LAS Recomp that has previously been used to port games to PC. The program acts as an unofficial translation layer, effectively translating the game's code to run on Android. To get it up and running, users need to supply their own Nintendo Switch version 1.0.0 copy of the game and decryption keys.
Android 11 or later is required for the port to work properly. Code compilation is done on the phone itself, not on a PC. It takes around 11 minutes to compile on a Samsung Galaxy S20 FE (Snapdragon 865). Sword/shield/item button controls are adaptive and customizable, with the ability to set the controls however the user wants.
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening Remake runs at a solid 60 FPS (2x frame generation) on Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, according to performance tests. Other devices could run faster or slower than the Samsung, depending on their hardware. According to community feedback in project discussions, there may be some stability concerns like crashes, graphical glitches and control problems.
This fan project highlights what is possible on modern Android devices when it comes to running Nintendo Switch games through recompilation. Of course, the Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening Remake Android port is unofficial and requires you to supply your own game assets and meet certain Android system requirements.
