Hideo Kojima uses the 'walking simulator' label applied to Death Stranding to explain how social media algorithms create distorted narratives and echo chambers.

Sometimes the algorithms behind social media can create an opinion on something before people have actually tried it. And that can create an unhealthy distortion when it comes to creative media, something that game devs are now very aware of. Hideo Kojima uses his own studio's game Death Stranding to explain the echo chambers where these narratives are created without any truth behind them.

Kojima warns AI algorithms worsen echo chambers after Death Stranding mislabeling

During an interview with filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu, Kojima Productions' director Hideo Kojima spoke about these echo chambers. This was to coincide with Digger, Iñárritu's documentary, getting a theatrical release in Japan. Kojima focused in on the example of Death Stranding being referred to as a 'walking simulator' without anyone actually playing it.

This wrong assumption of how the game was is a perfect example of a narrative being created by a social media hivemind, according to the dev. He was worried that AI algorithms are now making echo chambers even worse, and this technological loop means there's no way for users to get other opinions about creative media.

Alejandro González Iñárritu, the director, pointed out that it's often the case that people have strong opinions on something they don't know about. This certainty in the unknown is the new normal now, he said. Hideo Kojima's comments here reflect the conflict between algorithmically curated content and user interaction when it comes to the gaming world.

We've been following Death Stranding closely, and that includes new things such as Death Stranding 2 Update 1.8 Released patch notes. And as it turns out, the dev is aware of the way that things are spoken about in the digital world, as we can see from this interview with Kojima. It just goes to show the struggle that exists between keeping creative intentions intact in the age of automated media.
