Grand Theft Auto VI now won't be released until November 19, 2026. This new delay in the release window means the wait for players who have been tracking the game since the first trailer has just gotten longer. This is the second big delay for the hotly anticipated open-world game. If you're hoping to play the next one in the series, you're going to have to adjust your expectations for when you'll be able to get your hands on it on current-gen consoles.
Take-Two pushes release to late 2026, missing 2025 holiday window
Take-Two Interactive has confirmed this change in release timing for the Rockstar Games title. Still, the game is expected to come out on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S platforms. That means they're sticking to the current gen of consoles for their release instead of holding out for next-gen systems. At least with this delay they'll have more time to polish the game before it's released.
So, Grand Theft Auto VI now has a release date of November 19, 2026. That puts it in the back half of the year and out of the holiday crunch for the current year. But that means it's definitely not going to be coming out in 2025. They haven't specified any particular technical reason for needing more time for development from Rockstar Games.
Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick was apparently pretty shocked by this latest change in schedule. "Are you kidding me? Please tell me you're kidding," he said. But Rockstar Games Publishing Head Jennifer Kolbe says that Zelnick understood the business and creative reasons for the delay. And the company claims they need that extra time to make sure the game is up to their quality standards. In any case, the delay does mean we know the game won't be out when they first projected it to be.
This isn't the first time we heard about a 2025 release goal for the game. Now we're looking at late 2026. That's a pretty big change in the development cycle. You can expect more to come from Rockstar as the new date gets closer. It does mean that they're going for a polished release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, at least.
