Local co-op play is now possible in Resident Evil 2 Remake through a community modification, allowing players to experience the horror title with a friend on the same screen. This change matters because it transforms a strictly single-player survival experience into a shared activity, letting couples or friends tackle the game together rather than alone. The modification effectively removes the isolation that defines the original campaign.
Community modification enables split-screen play and AI support
The mod, titled "Local Couch Co-op (formally known as HUNK'y Friend)," is available on Nexus Mods and requires ReFramework v1.5.9.1 to function properly. It introduces split-screen functionality and fixed-angle camera support for both players. The tool also implements a "knocked down" mechanic that allows one player to revive another who has fallen in combat.
At the center of this addition is the character Hunk, who serves as an AI companion for the second player. Originally designed as a support unit that fights alongside Leon or Claire with first aid kits and ammunition, Hunk now operates as a full-fledged participant in the split-screen experience. He maintains his own inventory and can actively engage in combat scenarios.
Modder Shopcreeper01 created this feature specifically to help his wife play through the game, as she finds the horror elements frightening. By providing a capable AI partner, the mod reduces the pressure on the primary player and makes the experience more accessible. We have tracked other Resident Evil 2 Remake modifications, including a recent skin update featuring Bryan from the live-action film.
