RETRO

Retro Game Coders has released version 2.0 of RGC-BASIC, a retro-inspired BASIC language. The update adds support for MOD, XM, S3M, IT, OGG, and MP3 music formats. It also introduces concurrent sound effects alongside music playback.

New screen modes and expanded palette

The new version includes three new screen modes: a 320×200 full RGBA mode, a 320×200 256-colour palette-indexed mode, and a 640×400 RGBA canvas. The palette system has been expanded from 16 entries to 256, with live rotation support. Developers can now use off-screen RGBA surfaces with alpha compositing, as well as per-zone and per-scanline scrolling. The DRAWTEXT command has been reworked to handle foreground and background colour in a single call.

RGC-BASIC 2.0 is available now globally. It runs in the browser through the existing online IDE, requiring no installation.

The update brings RGC-BASIC closer to the capabilities of classic home computer BASIC dialects while adding modern multimedia features. Retro Game Coders has not announced plans for further updates or a version 3.0.
