Fortnite has returned to the Apple App Store for iOS and Mac. The game was removed in 2020 after Epic Games introduced a direct payment system that bypassed Apple's 30% fee. The return comes as the legal battle between the two companies enters its final phase.
Epic challenges Apple's 30% fee
Epic Games is challenging Apple's 30% commission on in-app purchases. Courts have ruled that Apple must allow third-party payment processing. Epic argues that Apple has not fully complied with the ruling and continues to impose what it calls "junk fees."
Fortnite is available on the App Store worldwide starting January 25, 2025.
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney stated that Apple has fragmented iOS features and fees by territory and delayed the pursuit of justice. The company called on regulators worldwide to enforce laws against Apple's practices. Fortnite generated over $20 billion in revenue by the end of 2023.
Epic Games has not confirmed whether the version on the App Store includes direct payment options. The company said it is confident that once Apple is forced to show its costs, governments will not allow the fees to stand.
