Modders Jessica Natalia and Junior_Djjr have released Proper Shaders version 1.6.5 for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Vice City. This update significantly enhances the visual fidelity of these classic titles by introducing advanced lighting and shadow effects. Players seeking a more realistic look for their open-world drives will find these changes immediately noticeable. The release brings modern rendering techniques to games that originally lacked them.
Modders release major graphics overhaul for classic titles
The mod transforms the visual engine of both titles through extensive graphical overhauls. For San Andreas, the update adds volumetric light beams, soft shadows, and screen-space global illumination. It also implements ambient occlusion, skylight, and three-color ambient lighting to improve depth and realism. Vice City receives a different set of upgrades, including AMD FSR with Frame Generation and fluid simulation water physics.
Technical details for the San Andreas version include four-level dynamic shadows and height fog effects. The mod supports normal, roughness, and metallic maps for improved material definition. Vehicles now feature physically based rendering materials and Fresnel effects. The update also handles rain effects, water caustics, and real-time reflections. It supports unlimited TXDP files and includes over 11,000 pre-configured textures.
The Vice City version adds NVIDIA PCCS shadows and a physically based atmosphere. It also introduces volumetric plane contrails and volumetric lights to enhance the skybox. Both versions currently operate in an alpha stage with known bugs and glitches. The modders have stated that this alpha phase will last until December. A full public release is scheduled for December 5.
Users can currently access the alpha version through a Patreon subscription. The public release will remove the paywall and make the mod available to everyone. We recommend waiting for the December 5 release if you prefer a stable experience without subscription fees. The final build will include all the graphical improvements detailed in this update.
