Sega is bringing back a classic arcade shooter with a twist that changes how players enter the game world. House of the Dead: Reawakened uses a physical set piece to bridge the gap between the lobby and the virtual mansion. This approach matters because it turns the act of walking through a door into the actual start of the gameplay loop. Arcade operators looking to refresh their horror offerings now have a new hardware concept to consider.
Sega reveals immersive VR cabinet design with large exterior screen for upcoming arcade title
The experience centers on a custom cabinet that features an 85-inch display positioned to look like the front door of a creepy mansion. Flanking this main screen are two 43-inch vertical displays that simulate shuttered windows. Players step into the VR area while spectators watch the exterior facade on the large screen. Sega built the game itself using Unreal Engine 5 to power the visual effects inside the headset.
Inside the virtual space, players use VR headsets that provide their own 2.1 channel audio. They aim and shoot with haptic recoil gun controllers that simulate the weight of the weapons. The game structure consists of three distinct missions that guide the action. This setup supports both single-player and cooperative multiplayer modes for groups of friends.
Sega Amusements teased the project with a video caption reading 'something is reawakening' on their official YouTube channel. The title marks the first main installment in the series since House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn released in 2018. Sega confirmed the game will appear at the IAAPA Expo in November for industry attendees to see. We do not yet have a price or a general public release date for arcades outside of this event.
