LG Display released a study showing that OLED panels at 480Hz significantly improve hit accuracy in first-person shooters compared to standard 60Hz displays. This finding suggests that upgrading to ultra-high refresh OLED monitors can provide a measurable edge in fast-paced gaming scenarios.

Research links OLED response times to reduced input lag and improved aim

The research focused on how display technology impacts player performance in competitive gaming environments. LG Display attributes the observed improvements to the physical properties of OLED screens, which allow for faster pixel response times. This technical difference between OLED and traditional LCD panels appears to be a key factor in reducing input lag during intense gameplay.

The study tested four specific refresh rates: 60Hz, 240Hz, 360Hz, and 480Hz. Participants playing a first-person shooter showed a 38% increase in hit accuracy when moving from 60Hz to 480Hz. Most of this gain occurred between 60Hz and 240Hz, with the jump from 240Hz to 480Hz adding another 10% improvement in accuracy.

Input lag also decreased by more than 10 milliseconds when comparing 480Hz to 60Hz operation. However, a separate study published in Science Direct found no statistically significant performance difference between 144Hz and 360Hz on LCD monitors. This contrast highlights that the benefits of extreme refresh rates may be specific to OLED technology rather than a universal rule for all display types.

Readers should note that this research was sponsored by LG Display, so some skepticism regarding the results is warranted. The study involved 31 adult male gamers, which limits the demographic scope of the findings. While the data supports the value of high-refresh OLED monitors for competitive play, the manufacturer-backed nature of the study requires careful interpretation.
