Sony plans to stop producing Blu-Ray discs for new PlayStation 5 releases starting in early 2028. This shift ends the era of physical games for the console and removes a key option for buyers who prefer tangible media. The change affects how players store and trade their libraries moving forward.
Sony PS5 physical media phase-out begins 2028 despite publisher concerns
Sony has surveyed developers and partners about their concerns over the end of physical discs. Kenzo Saruhashi, CEO of Nippon Ichi and president of NIS America, confirmed that the company is listening to customer feedback regarding physical media. The publisher is concerned about the loss of physical editions for their titles.
Saruhashi revealed that Sony has been hearing a lot of feedback from customers. Despite the plans to stop Blu-Ray production, the publisher will continue making the physical editions it is known for. A potential compromise includes limited physical releases for Collector's Editions or existing titles.
So far, there are no concrete signs of reversing the decision, but the discussion may change in the future. We touched on Sony PS5 Drops Physical Discs in our earlier Sony coverage. The final policy remains unconfirmed as Sony weighs industry input.
