Sony's rumored Project Canis handheld may outperform the base PS5 using 540p rendering and PSSR 3.0 upscaling, with a late 2027 launch window.

Sony is developing a next-generation handheld console that could shift how players approach portable gaming. The device, known as Project Canis, aims to deliver performance that rivals stationary home consoles while maintaining a portable form factor. This approach matters because it challenges the traditional boundary between handheld and home gaming hardware.

Leaked specs show custom AMD chip and upscaling tech targeting late 2027

The hardware centers on a custom 3-nanometer chip designed specifically for this platform. GameGPU reported that the chip features six Zen 6 CPU cores, split between four standard Zen 6c cores and two power-saving Zen 6 LP cores. The system pairs this processing power with 24GB of shared LPDDR5X memory on a 192-bit bus. Strict power limits ranging from 15W to 25W depend on whether the device is used in portable or docked mode.

In portable mode, the chip reportedly runs at 1.2GHz for 4.91 TFLOPS of compute. Docked, clocks rise to 1.65GHz for a peak of 6.75 TFLOPS. GameGPU estimates effective performance levels of 10 to 11 TFLOPS in portable mode and roughly 14 TFLOPS when docked.

The handheld's real selling point isn't raw hardware, it's PSSR 3.0, Sony's next-generation upscaling and technology. Games will render internally at just 540p in portable mode before PSSR 3.0 upscales the image to the device's native 1080p display. Kepler_L2 claimed PSSR 3.0 could exceed 's 4.5 in image quality. This upscaling strategy allows the device to outperform the base PS5 in rasterization while managing power consumption.

Insiders expect Project Canis to launch in late 2027. The leak comes from GameGPU, which has a less established track record than other leakers like Kepler_L2.
