Apple iOS 27 Handoff lets you use one number on two iPhones

Apple iOS 27 Handoff lets users keep one phone number active on two iPhones simultaneously. Learn how dual- device number sharing works with carrier support.

Apple is introducing a new feature in iOS 27 that lets users keep their primary phone number active on two different iPhones at the same time. This change matters because it removes the friction of swapping SIM cards or juggling multiple numbers for work and personal life. Users who carry two devices can now route calls and data to whichever phone they are currently using without losing connectivity on the other.

iOS 27 feature allows calls and data routing to unlocked device

The feature, called Handoff, works by keeping the physical SIM or eSIM in one device while allowing the other unlocked iPhone to receive calls. Apple expects to launch this capability alongside the rumored iPhone Ultra in the fall. The system relies on carrier support, with T-Mobile in the US cited as an example of a provider enabling the service.

To switch the active number between devices, users simply unlock the desired iPhone. The network then routes incoming calls and data to that specific device. The SIM card itself remains physically located in the primary phone, but the logical connection shifts based on which device is active.

This functionality requires iOS 27, which sources indicate will arrive this fall. The feature should also be available on older iPhones that support the update. We have been tracking iPhone closely — see our earlier coverage on Apple Upgrade Leasing Service Launches Next.

Apple confirms that Handoff will launch with iOS 27 in the fall. The feature enables seamless number sharing between two iPhones when supported by the carrier.
