Leaked details suggest Huawei, Samsung, Apple, and others are developing wide- screen foldables with larger inner displays and new chips.

The smartphone industry is shifting toward a wider aspect ratio for foldable devices, moving away from the traditional tall, narrow form factor that has dominated the market. This design change provides a more tablet-like experience when unfolded, enhancing media consumption and multitasking for users who value screen real estate. Major manufacturers are developing devices that prioritize width over height, signaling a potential shift in how users hold and use foldable phones.

Major brands shift to wider aspect ratios for improved tablet-like experiences

Huawei appears to be the furthest along in this transition, having already released the Pura X, which folds sideways into a wide display. The company later expanded this lineup with the Pura X Max, a larger book-style foldable equipped with the newer Kirin 9030 Pro processor. Samsung has also entered the fray with the redesigned Galaxy Z Fold 8, which features a shorter, wider shape compared to its predecessors. These early releases establish a baseline for the new wide-screen standard that other brands are attempting to match.

Upcoming devices from Xiaomi, Apple, Honor, and Oppo are revealing specific hardware details that support this wider design philosophy. Leaked images of the Xiaomi Mix Fold 5 show a 4:3 display ratio, and the device will ship with HyperOS 4 out of the box. Apple is preparing a foldable iPhone with a 7.6-inch inner screen and a smaller cover display, with a launch expected around September. Honor is testing a wide foldable powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chip and a massive 7,000mAh battery, while Oppo’s Find N7 is tipped for a Q1 2027 launch with a 6,500mAh battery.

Vivo is also reportedly exploring the wide-screen foldable category, joining the list of brands developing these new devices. None of these details are confirmed, and launch plans can change as manufacturers refine their prototypes and supply chains. Buyers should anticipate a period of uncertainty as wide-screen models move from leaks to official announcements. The industry is currently in a transition phase where form factors are being redefined before final specifications are confirmed.
