GTA 6 Retail Box Drops Physical Disc for Digital Download Code
CONSOLES

Take-Two Interactive is changing how players access Grand Theft Auto 6 by removing the physical disc from the retail package. This shift means buyers will receive a download code inside the box instead of a playable disc. The move signals a broader industry transition toward digital distribution that affects how gamers store and manage their libraries.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick explains why physical media is being phased out for major titles

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick explained that the company views its business as well over 90% digitally distributed. He argued that discs do not make sense for consumers when major titles require online registration to play anyway. Zelnick noted that players are already connected to the internet, so downloading the game directly is just as convenient as using a disc.

The company compared potential future physical releases to vinyl records in the music industry. Zelnick suggested that physical copies might still exist occasionally but will not be the standard for big games. He referenced Sony's plan to stop producing PlayStation game discs starting in 2028 as evidence that the industry is moving in this direction.

GTA 6 will not be released on a physical disc. The retail box will only include a digital download code. This decision aligns with Take-Two's strategy to prioritize digital distribution for its largest titles. The change reflects a practical response to how modern gamers access and install software.
