Grand Theft Auto VI will arrive with a $79.99 base price, a move that confirms the industry standard for major new releases. The pricing structure indicates that consumers should expect higher costs for upcoming major releases. This move follows industry trends where digital distribution lowers manufacturing expenses while potentially increasing retail prices.

Take-Two confirms digital download code in box for major release

Take-Two Interactive is preparing to launch the game with an ultimate edition priced at $99.99. The company plans to ship the physical version in a branded box that contains only a digital download code. This approach removes the optical disc entirely from the consumer package while maintaining a tangible retail product.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick explained that physical discs do not make sense for consumers when a business is over 90% digital. He noted that online registration is becoming the standard requirement for most major software releases. The company views this shift as the natural direction for the industry rather than a temporary trend.

Zelnick described the pre-order numbers for the title as exceptional and unlike anything the industry has seen before. This surge in demand coincides with Sony's plan to stop releasing new PlayStation games on discs starting in 2028. Strong consumer demand alongside hardware shifts points toward a swift move toward digital-only platforms.
