Capcom is dismissing concerns that the gaming industry's push toward all-digital distribution will hurt its business. The company says the shift will not have a significant impact on its sales figures. This matters because major console makers are planning to remove physical media from their hardware in the coming years. Buyers who worry about game availability on future consoles should know Capcom is well prepared for that change.

Publisher relies on digital channels for 90% of unit sales

The Japanese developer and publisher operates in a market that is already heavily digital. Sony has announced that physical disc games will be discontinued for PlayStation consoles starting in January 2028. Xbox is reportedly preparing a similar disc-to-digital system for its current Xbox One and /S consoles. These moves are reshaping how players acquire and store their games.

Capcom relies on digital channels for the vast majority of its revenue. The company stated that approximately 90% of its unit sales are digital. This high percentage means the company has already adapted its supply chain and distribution methods to a digital-first model. The transition will require little operational change for the publisher.

Financial results from the first quarter support this digital strategy. Capcom reported net sales of 70.41 billion yen, which is around $430 million. This figure represents a 54.7% increase compared to the same period last year. Strong performance in digital titles is driving this growth.

The company's hit titles are performing exceptionally well in digital formats. Resident Evil Requiem has sold more than 8 million copies since its release. Most of these sales come from digital downloads rather than physical discs. This trend confirms that popular franchises are thriving in the digital ecosystem.

Capcom confirmed its stance in an official reply to industry questions. The company said, "Approximately 90% of our unit sales are digital. We do not anticipate a significant impact at this time." This statement clarifies that the publisher is not concerned about the loss of physical media options for consumers.
