Wizards of the Coast is reshaping the Dungeons & Dragons landscape with its new Universes Beyond program, bringing major video game franchises into the tabletop role-playing game. This shift matters to players because it expands the available character options and story settings beyond the traditional fantasy world. The initiative officially launched at Gen Con, marking a strategic move to integrate popular licensed IP into the 5.5e system.

Major franchises join the tabletop role-playing game in 2026 and 2027

The first major collaboration targets the World of Warcraft universe, with the core rulebook set to arrive on November 17, 2026. Players who purchase the Master Tier on D&D Beyond will gain early access to this content starting November 3, 2026. This release introduces a substantial amount of new material, including 13 distinct classes and a variety of new subclasses tailored to the Warcraft aesthetic.

The World of Warcraft book adds specific playable species such as Dracthyr, Draenei, Earthen, Forsaken, and Haranir to the game. It also includes new monsters, spells, and seven iconic dungeons that players can explore using the standard game mechanics. This content is designed to fit seamlessly into the existing 5.5e framework, allowing fans to roleplay as their favorite Warcraft characters.

Looking ahead to 2027, Wizards announced a Star Wars collaboration titled Season of Rebellion, which will expand the sci-fi options for the game. The same year will also see the return of classic settings with Dark Sun: Blood and Power, Dark Sun: Edge of Oblivion, and Greyhawk: Crown of the Witch Queen. Classic creators Tracy Hickman and Luke Gygax are involved in the Dragonlance and Greyhawk projects, while R.A. Salvatore is writing a new Drizzt Do'Urden story.

D&D Beyond is also updating its digital tools to support this growing ecosystem, including a new Looking for Group feature and a mobile app update. These digital enhancements aim to make it easier for players to organize campaigns and access their character sheets on the go.
