Sony is closing the PlayStation Store for the PS3 and PS Vita, ending nearly two decades of digital support for these legacy consoles. This change matters to owners of these devices because it removes the ability to purchase new games or add-ons, though existing libraries remain intact. The shutdown follows a previous attempt in 2021 that Sony reversed after significant player backlash.

Legacy consoles lose digital storefronts in phased global shutdown

The company cited the inability of the PS3 and PS Vita hardware to support modern payment processing standards as the primary reason for the closure. Sony Interactive Entertainment stated that the decision came after careful reflection on the long-term viability of maintaining these outdated storefronts. The move affects the global ecosystem for these specific hardware generations.

The closure will roll out in phases across different regions starting in August 2026. The PlayStation Store on PS3 will close first in Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua during August 2026. Additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries will see their stores shut down later in 2026. All other countries will experience the full closure of both PS3 and PS Vita stores in July 2027.

Users will retain the ability to download previously purchased content even after the stores officially close. This ensures that digital libraries remain accessible for offline play and reinstallation. The company confirmed that the infrastructure for redownloads will remain operational despite the storefront shutdown.

We touched on Sony Removes Terminator 2, Total Recall in our earlier Sony coverage. This latest announcement marks the final chapter for digital commerce on these platforms. Owners of PS3 and PS Vita devices should ensure they have downloaded any desired content before the regional deadlines.
