Microsoft is reviving its Xbox backwards compatibility program. The company plans to introduce new ways to play classic games as part of the Xbox 25th anniversary in 2026.

New features include Auto HDR and FPS Boost expansion

The initiative will cover games from four generations of Xbox hardware. Features such as Auto HDR and FPS Boost may be expanded to enhance older titles.

The new backwards compatibility features are expected to roll out globally in 2026. Microsoft announced the plans at GDC 2026.

Jason Ronald, a Microsoft executive, stated that the company is committed to keeping games from four generations playable. He said new ways to play iconic games will be introduced later this year. Microsoft has not confirmed which specific games or features will be included.
